K’ooben (Kitchen)

K’ooben is the Yucatec term for the famous three-stoned hearth that centers the kitchen throughout the Maya region. Some of the furniture and cooking utensils found in a Maya kitchen include: a stone mortar & pestle and a metate (or mealing stone) used for processing grains and seeds. Metates are typically used by women who would grind nixtamalized maize for making tortillas; a circular table, a wooden stool, a bench and the comal (a round piece of sheet or clay to cook corn dough tortillas).
