Indigenous Eco Museum Launched in Belize

An important education initiative has launched in Ambergris Caye, Belize. The new Eco Museum showcases the way of life of the Maya, Baymen and Mestizo people through the ages. The aim of the museum is to highlight traditional crafts, food, culture and arts in order to keep local history alive. New generations will be able to see how their ancestors lived, while they enjoy hands-on demonstrations, activities and experiences. Ten kiosks set on a trail throughout the lush natural habitat of the museum grounds, showcase historical information and educational artifacts.

Save the date! The official launch event will be held on June 9th 2024, at La Providencia. Renowned chef Jennie Staines will be present at the Eco museum to wow guests by cooking traditional recipes with her famous flair. Visitors will enjoy a fascinating day out surrounded by verdant flora and fauna, while connecting with their local community in support of their heritage.

The museum strives to not only preserve local customs and culture, but also to protect the wildlife that inhabits the 1-acre site. Birds, reptiles and mammals such as the Yucatan Jay, Saltwater Crocodile and the Yucatan Squirrel are flourishing at the venue. Conservation and research practices are in place at the Eco Museum to ensure that the resident species continue to thrive.

Visitors are welcome to visit the Eco Museum for a small donation to the registered Non-profit Organization Green Reef Environmental Institute. School trips and educational workshops will be hosted throughout the year.

Corporate sponsors are currently being sought to help keep the island’s indigenous way of life alive for future generations. Please contact the corporate partnerships team on +501 650-6601 to pledge your support for this important initiative.
