The Logwood Industry

In the late 1880s and early 1890s, logwood was making a resurgence. Contractors came to Ambergris Caye both to obtain cutting rights from the Blakes and to sign contracts with workers who would do the cutting. The work was gruelling and their earnings were low, but thanks to a combination of falling prices, depletion of resources and more lucrative employment opportunities, the logwood industry disappeared from Ambergris Caye by 1910.
