Ancient Maya Fishermen

The rich catches of the sea such as scale fish, conch, sea turtles, and manatees were corned (salted), smoked and traded inland. Sting rays were killed along the beaches for the sharp bones in their tails, which were used by priests in bloodletting rituals. Seashells (helmet, horse conch, triton shell, queen conch, olive, thorny oysters) were used in jewellery, as musical instruments, and tools.
