Ancient Maya Saltworks

Salt was a valuable commodity among the Maya. It served as a necessary preservative and was used for medicinal and ritual purposes. The Classic Maya of Ambergris Caye made large amounts of salt (sal cocida) by boiling brine in pots over fires in salt kitchens. They used salt jars to make fire-hardened salt cakes for transport to inland marketplaces.
