The first known inhabitants of Ambergris Caye were Maya. The earliest archaeological evidence of their presence dates to the Late Preclassic period over 2,000 years ago. At the height of the Maya occupation, it is thought that upwards of 20,000 Maya lived on Ambergris Caye as fishermen and traders.
